History

Nanzo-in is a Shingon Buddhist temple located in Shinoshiro Town, Fukuoka Prefecture, serving as the head temple of the Shinoshiro Shikoku 88 Sacred Sites pilgrimage route and recognized as the first pilgrimage station. It functions as the starting point for one of Kyushu's most important pilgrimage destinations, which replicates the famous Shikoku 88 Temple Circuit, attracting numerous visitors throughout the year.

Originally descended from temples associated with Mount Koya, the temple faced existential threats during the Meiji period's anti-Buddhist campaigns. However, through the dedicated efforts of local communities over many years, it was relocated to its current location in Shinoshiro in 1899, preserving its legacy to the present day.

Today, Nanzo-in stands as one of Kyushu's most significant centers of spiritual devotion. Daily prayers are conducted as visitors seek blessings, wish fulfillment, and inner peace. The temple nestles peacefully among verdant mountains, offering a serene atmosphere for contemplation. Within its grounds, multiple halls and Buddhist statues are scattered throughout, allowing visitors to experience Japanese Buddhist culture through leisurely exploration.

Beyond its role as a tourist destination, Nanzo-in remains a cherished place of prayer for countless people, embodying a unique space where history and faith continue to flourish and breathe with vitality.
